Google adds Sheets canvas to turn spreadsheets into interactive apps

Google announced on Aug 13, 2026 that Sheets canvas is a new Google Sheets feature designed to convert rows and columns into interactive, visual mini-apps. According to Google, the tool uses Gemini and accepts natural-language prompts to build custom layouts such as study trackers, seating charts, or dashboards without requiring formulas or programming.

How it works

Google describes Sheets canvas as a dynamic, read-write layer that sits on top of spreadsheet data. Changes made in the canvas or in the underlying sheet are synced in real time, the company said. Users can further adjust layout, design and functionality by prompting Gemini to make edits.

Google says the feature is intended to let people visually organize, edit and navigate data in flexible formats. The company emphasized that no coding skills are required: users only need to describe what they want and Gemini generates the initial canvas.

Uses and examples

Google offered examples of potential uses, including turning assignment lists into interactive study aids, creating a dashboard to track fantasy football statistics, and converting guest RSVP data into a drag-and-drop seating chart. Because a canvas lives as a tab in Google Sheets, Google said it can be shared with collaborators like any other sheet.

Google also noted that users can continue to refine a canvas after generation, prompting Gemini for layout or functional changes while keeping the canvas linked to the base data.

On availability, Google said Sheets canvas is available globally in English to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers as of Aug 13, 2026. The company added that the feature is rolling out to Google Workspace customers on Business or Enterprise Standard and Plus plans, and to Google AI Pro for Education add-on subscribers.

To try Sheets canvas, Google instructs users to open a Google Sheets spreadsheet and select the “Create canvas” option in the Ask Gemini side panel.
