OpenAI Introduces Visual Ads Alongside ChatGPT Image Generation

Visual Display Ads Launching Soon

OpenAI is set to introduce visual display ads that will appear alongside images generated by ChatGPT. These ads will be clearly labeled and are designed not to influence the responses provided by the AI. The initial rollout is scheduled for later this month in the U.S., featuring products and services from a select group of advertisers.

Context of the Rollout

This development comes on the heels of Meta’s launch of Muse, a free agentic AI app that poses a growing challenge to established chatbots like ChatGPT. Earlier this year, OpenAI began integrating ads to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers, expanding this feature to India in August. The company anticipates that this ad format will eventually reach ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users as it rolls out globally.

Ad Measurement and Partnerships

To enhance its advertising capabilities, OpenAI is expanding its ad measurement tools and partner ecosystem. The company has partnered with various click-attribution and analytics providers, including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. Additionally, full-funnel and advanced measurement partners such as Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL are also involved.

Geo-Based Experiments and Brand Suitability

OpenAI is collaborating with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to facilitate geo-based advertising experiments. Furthermore, the company is developing pilots for evaluating brand suitability with assistance from DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS), aimed at helping advertisers navigate the ChatGPT ad environment.

User Experience Considerations

While the introduction of visual ads may enhance the advertising experience for brands, it could also disrupt the user experience. This disruption might encourage more casual users to consider opting for a subscription to avoid ads. Overall, these initiatives are part of OpenAI’s strategy to establish ChatGPT as a viable ad-supported platform for users on free and lower-cost plans.
