Google announced Google Pics on Sep 1, 2026, a new AI feature for creating and editing images directly within Google Workspace. Google says the tool will be available over the coming weeks to all Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and most Workspace business customers.
Core capabilities
According to Google, Google Pics is built on the Nano Banana image generation and editing model. The company describes a set of fine-tuned editing functions that let users generate imagery from text prompts and apply targeted changes without starting over.
Highlighted features include object segmentation to isolate and transform elements of an image, in-image text editing and translation that preserves layout and font, and the ability to produce multiple generated variations from a single prompt. Google also notes collaborative editing so teams can work on the same image together.
Workspace integration and workflow
Google states the feature will be available both as a standalone product and integrated into Workspace apps. Integration begins with Docs and Slides and will reach Drive in the coming weeks. Google says this approach aims to remove the need to copy and paste between applications when creating or refining visuals.
The announcement adds that users can drop files from Drive into Google Pics to develop mockups or concept designs directly where they work. Google further notes that millions of users interact with billions of images across Workspace products every month.
Google also cautions that generative AI is experimental. The company directs interested users to try the feature at pics.new and specifies the initial rollout targets Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and most Workspace business customers.
