GPT-6 Astra is now available in ChatGPT Work, Codex, and via the API. The model is presented as optimized for tasks that involve using desktop applications and web tools, software engineering, cybersecurity, and scientific workflows.
Performance and cost
According to published evaluations, GPT-6 Astra performs well on tests of computer use and coding. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Astra scored 57.9%, compared with 37.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol2 and 55.8% for Claude Fable 5.1. The company reported estimated API cost-per-task reductions of roughly 9% versus GPT-5.6 Sol2 and about 63% versus Claude Fable 5.1 on those tasks.
In a cited example, Astra completed Financial Modeling World Cup challenges derived from the 2023 Microsoft Excel World Championship about four times faster than the winning human competitor, a metric said to reduce model-building time for analysts. Pricing for Astra is listed at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
Adoption and developer accounts
Early internal use reportedly included tasks such as turning multicamera footage into a developer impressions video and diagnosing a memory-allocation bottleneck that improved Codex session latency by 25× with increased peak memory use. A company representative, Silas Alberti, SVP Research, Cognition, described improved computer use, writing, and codebase understanding on internal benchmarks.
Safety, controls and availability
During training, Astra was evaluated on an internal computer use safety benchmark. That evaluation reportedly found unintended outcomes 89% less often than GPT-5.6 Sol and 74.7% less often than Claude Fable 5.1. The model is said to meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under the Preparedness Framework.
New enterprise controls allow administrators to restrict access to approved sites and desktop applications, manage uploads and downloads, and require confirmations before consequential actions. Automated review of potentially unsafe tool calls is also included. Zero Data Retention is available for eligible API customers on supported endpoints, subject to approval.
Astra is available immediately in ChatGPT Work and Codex and through the API; enterprise access is off by default and must be enabled under the applicable rate card and agreement.
