On August 19, 2026, Replit announced Free Mode, a free software-creation experience powered by GPT‑5.6 Luna that aims to let users develop ideas into working software without worrying about token costs.
What Free Mode offers
Replit says Free Mode delivers fast answers, suggestions, feedback and analysis in seconds without consuming usage. The platform’s Agent component is designed to understand the full context of a user’s projects so it can help plan, ideate, shape, optimize and explore ideas before users switch into Build Mode.
When tasks require more advanced reasoning, Replit can route those requests to GPT‑5.6 Sol and then return to Free Mode powered by GPT‑5.6 Luna while preserving project context, the company said.
Model economics and availability
Replit described model cost as one of the final barriers to broad access for software creation. The company credited recent OpenAI price cuts for making Free Mode feasible at scale. “Thanks to OpenAI and the price cuts that you made recently, you made it possible for us to offer it to millions of users in Free Mode,” said Amjad Masad, Co‑Founder and CEO of Replit.
Replit noted it was an early user of GPT‑3 and has continued building with OpenAI models as natural-language software development evolved. The announcement frames Free Mode as part of a shared goal between Replit and OpenAI to expand who can build software, beyond a small group of specialists.
Replit quoted Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, saying that broader access to building tools could produce a large entrepreneurial boom if anyone with internet access can start a product or startup. Masad added that increasing the number of people able to build by 100x would expand those opportunities, according to the company.
