Discovery of a New Enzyme System
Anthropic announced that researchers in its Bay Area wet biology lab have identified a previously unknown enzyme system with properties “reminiscent of CRISPR.” This discovery, according to the company, was found in the DNA of bacteriophages and appears capable of performing operations such as cutting, copying, and pasting DNA.
Research Methodology
The discovery emerged from computational searches followed by laboratory work. Anthropic reported that the effort required approximately 21 hours of concentrated work by its model Claude, utilizing around 950 autonomous agents and processing approximately 210 million tokens. Notably, all physical experiments were conducted by human scientists in the lab.
Lab Operations and Safety
The lab was established this spring, although Anthropic did not specify the exact duration of its operation. The facility operates at biosafety levels BSL-1 and BSL-2 and does not handle pathogens that can infect humans.

Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei acknowledged that the discovery builds on prior academic work, specifically noting that a team from Stanford had previously identified a system “in some ways similar to the one Claude found.” He stated that the discovery was made “mostly, though not entirely, by Claude.” This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions in the industry regarding the safety and governance of advanced AI systems.
Future Automation Possibilities
Currently, Anthropic does not utilize a fully automated laboratory system, but Amodei indicated that such automation might be feasible in the future, provided appropriate safeguards are established.

For instance, Stanford researchers have published work on LLMs and CRISPR, UC San Francisco has reported on AI-designed enzymes, and Google introduced AlphaFold in 2020 as an AI tool for protein structure prediction.
