OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days after launch and is now used by tens of thousands of advertisers. The company said advertising is one pillar of its business model alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings and usage-based APIs.
Where ads appear and how they work
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Ads can use the context of the current conversation to display ads relevant to what a user is exploring. In some countries and depending on user settings, the ads system may also draw on context from a person’s broader ChatGPT experience. OpenAI emphasized that ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from ChatGPT’s answers, and do not influence those answers. The company also said advertisers do not receive access to private conversations and that users can control how ad experiences are personalized.
Ad platform growth and capabilities
OpenAI reported that ChatGPT Ads are available in over 40 countries through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team and partners. Starting later today, self-service purchasing via Ads Manager will be available across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The rollout follows an initial managed-sales, agency and partner-led model and an expansion of the ecosystem to more than 50 technology and measurement partners.
The company described several platform features: CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now represent the majority of campaigns, while Pixel and Conversions API serve as measurement and optimization foundations. OpenAI listed capabilities such as product feeds, platform and geographic targeting, and custom audiences. The announcement included examples of outcomes: an ecommerce advertiser achieved a 3x return on ad spend across campaigns over 28 days, and a technology partner reported that more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.
OpenAI said the next phase will add more markets, formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities, and explore new, more native ways for businesses to interact with consumers in ChatGPT. Self-service access through Ads Manager begins rolling out today across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (August 31, 2026).
