Figma Specs and Centralized Design Context
Figma has launched a suite of tools at its inaugural Config event in India, designed to provide teams and AI agents with clearer design guidelines. The highlight is Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor that allows organizations to define their design language. This guidance can be accessed within Figma files or alongside the canvas.
Figma Specs can function as a standalone file or coexist on the canvas. The editor enables references to other Figma elements, embedding FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs, as well as linking to design and code libraries. This centralized design context allows teams to include guidelines and libraries, serving as a single source of truth for agents and collaborators during the creation or iteration process.
Agent Availability and Code Layers
Recently, Figma expanded access to its agent on canvas, emphasizing tools that guide AI towards more predictable outcomes. Additionally, the company has transitioned its code layers feature, which integrates coding into canvas prototypes, from a private beta announced in June to a public beta. Users can now instruct the agent to convert designs into code or modify specific code segments to refine prototypes.
Payload Integration and Tool Support
Figma’s acquisition of the open-source headless CMS Payload last year is now bearing fruit, as the company integrates it with Figma Make for generating dynamic websites and managing content directly. Notably, Payload’s downloads have surged sixfold over the past year. Furthermore, Figma has added support for over 20 new tools through its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam.
Expansion in India
Figma has also highlighted its growth in India, having opened its first office there late last year, focusing on sales, partnerships, go-to-market strategies, and product support. The company noted that India represents its largest market outside the United States, with the platform being utilized by 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
According to Figma’s chief design officer, Loredana Crisan, “There are 17-times more lines of code being produced today than in the past. But when you’re looking at releases, only 1.3-times more releases.” This statement underscores the evolving landscape of software development and design.
