Huawei has announced that it will launch its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip in the first quarter of 2027, moving up the timeline from the previously planned Q3 2027. A spokesperson for Huawei confirmed that the Ascend 960 chips are being released ahead of schedule, with the new generation expected to double performance year over year. This updated timeline was presented by David Wang, Huawei’s rotating and acting chairman, during the Huawei Connect conference.
Peerium Computing Architecture
The Ascend 960DT is a key component of Huawei’s Peerium Computing Architecture, which aims to integrate multiple AI chips into larger computing systems. This architecture utilizes UnifiedBus technology to connect processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware. Huawei highlighted its Atlas 950 SuperPoD and Atlas 950 SuperCluster as the first systems built on this architecture, with the Atlas 950 SuperCluster capable of connecting up to 256,000 accelerator cards. Eric Xu, Huawei’s rotating chairman, stated that the architecture is designed to support both training and inference workloads.
Scaling Concerns and Geopolitical Context
Despite the advancements, some analysts have raised questions about Huawei’s scaling targets. Tech analyst Rui Ma noted on X that Huawei had previously indicated that the Atlas 960 SuperPoD would scale to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, while the recent announcement mentioned a system with only 4,096 chips. “The chip itself is coming WAY earlier, but the SuperPoD they announced is much smaller than what they originally laid out,” Ma commented.
Huawei continues to push forward with its chip development amid ongoing U.S. restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology. Ma expressed skepticism that these restrictions would hinder China’s semiconductor ambitions, emphasizing the high stakes for self-sufficiency in this sector. The geopolitical backdrop is significant, as U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet in Washington, D.C., on September 24, which may influence the tech landscape further.
