OpenAI brings GPT-6 and Intelligent UI to ChatGPT users

OpenAI introduced GPT-6 inside ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, pairing the new model with a feature called Intelligent UI that composes responses using text, visuals and interactive components. The company said the goal is to let the assistant present answers as charts, diagrams, maps, buttons and small tools when that format best serves a user’s request.

What Intelligent UI does

According to OpenAI, Intelligent UI selects a presentation—side-by-side comparisons, interactive diagrams or simple text—based on the question. Examples cited include step-by-step plans with timelines, mapped road-trip stops, and on-the-spot utilities such as bill splitters or savings calculators created inside the conversation.

OpenAI said it trained GPT-6 to use a library of native, streamable components and to compile interfaces progressively so parts of a response can appear while the model continues generating.

Performance and safety

OpenAI reported several performance comparisons with GPT-5.6. In internal tests, GPT-6 Instant began answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant for queries requiring web search. For certain agentic tasks, OpenAI said GPT-6 Extra High began answering in roughly the same time as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High.

The company also described updates to safety training, citing lessons from real-world use and adversarial testing. OpenAI said GPT-6 shows stronger resistance to multi-turn attempts to bypass safeguards, improves handling of high-risk misuse scenarios, and is better at recognizing and communicating its own limits. The company credited several of Astra’s safety advances as part of these updates.

Availability and rollout

OpenAI said GPT-6 with Intelligent UI begins rolling out globally today for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers and expands to Free and Go tiers starting tomorrow. GPT-6 in ChatGPT is powered by GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and by GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go. The company noted that the models powering Work and Codex will not change as part of this release.
