Collaboration Announcement
On October 23, 2026, OpenAI and Poland’s NASK National Research Institute formalized an agreement to collaborate on AI safety, security, and technical research. This partnership aims to leverage the expertise of both organizations to better understand emerging risks and enhance the resilience of digital systems.
Scope of Collaboration
The agreement connects OpenAI with NASK’s AI Safety Research Center, which operates as the Polish Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI). The collaboration will focus on evaluating increasingly capable AI systems, identifying potential vulnerabilities, strengthening safeguards, detecting synthetic AI-generated content, and addressing the multilingual aspects of these challenges.
Statements from Leadership
Radosław Nielek, Director of NASK, emphasized that “AI safety cannot be achieved in isolation,” highlighting the necessity of cooperation between public AI safety institutes and frontier AI developers to effectively anticipate risks and build public trust. Tom Duff Gordon, VP and Head of EMEA Policy at OpenAI, noted Poland’s exceptional scientific and technical talent, stating that this agreement allows for the integration of external expertise to challenge assumptions and reinforce safeguards.
Previous Cooperation and Context
This agreement builds on OpenAI’s existing collaborations with organizations such as the US Center for Advancing Standards and Innovation for Super Intelligence (CAISSI) and the UK AI Security Institute (AISI). OpenAI has advocated for international technical standards for frontier AI, aiming to unify approaches for evaluating capabilities, assessing risks, testing safeguards, and reporting incidents.
Additionally, the partnership is rooted in prior cooperation with Polish cyber defenders. In July, CERT Polska, which operates within NASK, gained access to OpenAI’s cyber-capable models through the Daybreak initiative. These models were instrumental in identifying six vulnerabilities in MikroTik RouterOS, leading to vendor-released fixes that CERT Polska confirmed successfully mitigated the observed attacks.
Future Research Plans
The signed agreement formalizes plans for joint research and expertise exchange between OpenAI and NASK’s AI Safety Research Center, contributing to international efforts to address AI-related risks.
