TikTok has launched a conversational AI Shopping Assistant along with a new one-click in-app checkout feature, enabling users to discover and purchase products directly within the app. The Shopping Assistant is designed to be context-aware, remembering users’ preferences and needs throughout their shopping journey.
Functionality of the Shopping Assistant
The Shopping Assistant provides real-time guidance, offering details such as product specifications, shipping information, sizing, and availability, as well as assistance in completing purchases. The one-click checkout feature allows users to buy directly from brands featured in their For You feed, which is TikTok’s primary algorithm-driven video stream.
Integration of Shopping Tools
By integrating these shopping tools directly into the app, TikTok aims to enhance the user experience by allowing users to obtain product information and complete transactions without redirecting them to external sites or applications. This strategy broadens TikTok’s e-commerce approach beyond its existing TikTok Shop, which launched in the U.S. in September 2023.
Partnerships and Economic Impact
The new features are being developed in collaboration with various commerce platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. According to TikTok’s Economic Impact Report released last week, the platform has contributed $81 billion to U.S. GDP, with 54 million Americans reporting they have purchased a product after viewing it on TikTok.
Future Projections
Market research firm eMarketer estimates that TikTok Shop will generate approximately $15.8 billion in U.S. sales by 2025, accounting for about 18% of all U.S. social commerce. While TikTok is enhancing its in-app shopping capabilities, it remains distinct from external AI tools like ChatGPT, focusing on keeping users engaged within its platform.
